Our bar design process

The process of designing a bar is a complex one, and one that balances workflow, technical precision, and, of course, aesthetics. Every one of our bar designs follows an exact methodology.

Initial consultation

The first step starts with assessing your needs and your vision. This includes the space that the bar will be residing in, the concept of your brand and/or project, and the service style and customer demographic. A bar design in the Upper West Side of New York City might differ from one in Orchard Road in Singapore, simply due to the customer demographic and the compliance.

From the first call, our goal is to translate your vision into constraints and requirements: What do you need, what do you want, how does it all flow, and how can we make sure all the is are dotted and the Ts crossed from a compliance standpoint.

Concept development

The next step is creating an identity for the bar and how that will manifest itself into a physical product. We build moodboards, recommend finishes/materials, and select what type of bar it will be. Island bars, corner bars, and wall-mounted bars all have different personality types that will dictate how they are used.

This stage is also where brand integration begins: your bar should look like it belongs to your venue, not like it was “added later” as a functional afterthought.

Space planning & flow optimization

The space where your bar will be installed needs to be analyzed for flow, as well as actual data metrics as they pertain to spacing. For example,  bars put in opposite corners of a space might cause differnet types of traffic patterns in terms of their position in relation to entry and exit doors.

Smart restaurant bar design reduces unnecessary movement, improves ticket times, and helps staff deliver consistent service even during rush hours.

Design functionality matters

A good bar layout design isn’t measured in how it looks on day one; it’s measured in how it performs when the venue is full and the bartender needs every motion to count.

3D visualization & layout drafts

With 3D technology these days, we can make it seem like you are already taking orders from the bar via 3D renderings that are ultra-lifelike. This will dictate not only the design concept but will also dictate some of the changes in layout or position due to data metrics that are related to traffic and the spacing of the environment where the bar will sit.

Technical planning & installation prep

Finally, we prepare technical documents for plumbing, electrics, equipment placement, and custom fixtures. These deliverables help contractors build accurately and help you avoid expensive mid-project changes that come from requirements that are confusing or unclear. We can also coordinate with your build team to confirm installation feasibility and resolve questions before construction begins.

Why professional bar design matters

When running a business in F&B or hospitality, aesthetics are incredibly important, but are only part of the picture when it comes to bar design. Functionality, flexibility, and compliance are just as important, and in the eyes of some, even more so. Below are some things that can change with cutting-edge bar design that focuses on functionality and operationality.

Business goal What bar design changes
Faster service Reduces bartender travel distance and tightens workstation setup
Higher average order value Improves product visibility, POS placement, and ordering flow
Lower operating friction Clarifies zones, storage, and replenishment rhythm
Fewer surprises during build Locks technical needs early (plumbing, electrics, fixtures)
Compliance from day one Accounts for hygiene, safety, and accessibility requirements

Optimized workflow & service speed

No one wants to wait forever for their drinks, particularly in the wee hours of the morning. The only way to achieve fast services is through optimized workflow, and a bar designed for maximum functionality positioned in the right location will achieve this.

Higher revenue potential

Design influences purchasing behavior even down to the millimeters in between bar sets. A good bar design layout puts high-value products in the center, and POS placement makes it easy to order. These are not just tips and tricks; these are formulas that have been run through financial software. models in Excel that indicate a good bar design can increase revenue by 2 or 3x.

Regulation compliance

Compliance is easiest when it is built into the plan, especially when venues and alcohol rules differ greatly throughout the globe. Our layouts consider hygiene zones, safe circulation, accessibility requirements, and technical constraints early, so you are not forced into last-minute redesigns during installation or inspections.

Brand integration

Your brand is your identity, and you want your bar to convey the same identity as your brand. Do you look for something sleek and modern that will fit into the Hong Kong midlevels? Or does your brand fit more in an elegant country house in the middle of Scotland? In hotels, especially, bare design sets the tone for the whole experience, and must communicate your brand loudly at first sight.

FAQ

At what stage of my project should I involve Vitrum?

The sooner you incorporate Vitrum in your project, the sooner you can plan out your bar’s layout prior to making any plumbing, electrical, and structural decisions. This saves money and creates a functional bar from the first day open for business.

Do you design bars for existing venues undergoing renovation?

Yes. Vitrum designs many bars within venues already in operation and undergoing renovation. When designing a new bar within an existing venue, we look for existing limitations and service patterns and see if we can improve them.

How do you determine the ideal bar layout for my space?

We examine the flow of people through your venue, how your bar will be operated (service style), how your staff will move around the area, where guests will interact with employees, and any other relevant compliance issues.

Can Vitrum coordinate directly with my contractors and project team?

Yes. Vitrum develops technical documents and can communicate directly with architects, interior designers, and contractors to help ensure that the bar design is properly installed.

Is bar design different for restaurants, hotels, and pubs?

Yes. Every type of venue has unique service rhythms and operational stresses. For example, a hotel lobby bar, a busy restaurant bar, and a local pub all have completely different bar layout strategies in order to operate efficiently.

What makes a professionally designed bar more efficient than a standard installation?

A professionally designed bar minimizes unnecessary employee movement, maximizes access to products, supports quicker service, and incorporates compliance into the design
